Save for Health Uganda

“Community Solidarity For Quality Health”

Save for Health Uganda (SHU) is a local NGO legally mandated to operated country-wide. Our VISION is “Healthier families with simplified access to quality health care” and MISSION is “To enhance the quality of health of Ugandans through self-managed Community Health Financing (CHF) schemes”. We are currently operating in 11 districts of Luwero, Nakaseke, Nakasongola, Bushenyi, Sheema, Mitooma, Mityana, Kassanda, Iganga, Mayuge Bugweri and our head office is located in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso district.

Our Key Focus Areas;

Community Health Financing (CHF)

This program aims to;
(a) Ease access to quality health care services and protect vulnerable families from catastrophic healthcare-related expenditures. (b) Advocate for both local and national policies that promote equity in accessing quality healthcare services for all citizens.

Household Livelihood Improvement

This program aims to; (a) Equip people from low-income families with skills and knowledge in starting and sustaining income-generating activities (IGAs) (b) Link the families to partner Micro-Finance Intitutions that to offer affordable loans to boost their IGAs.

Quality Health Care Service Delivery

This program aims to; (a) Empower partner health care providers’ staff with skills in Patient-Centred Care (PCC) and lobby for establishment of PCC facilities (b) Empower community members with knowledge on Patients’ rights/responsibilities and skills to advocate for delivery of quality healthcare services.

Women’s Health and Empowerment

This program aims to; (a) Empower women with knowledge to participate in key decision making regarding access to quality health care services both at family and community level. (b) Empower women to take elective leadership positions at all levels in government and private sector programs.

Our History

More than two decades of community-led healthcare in Uganda

SHU 2002

Milestone

SHU is formed

Save for Health Uganda is formed to improve families' access to quality healthcare through community health financing.

SHU 2003

Milestone

National registration

On 7 March, SHU is registered as a Ugandan not-for-profit NGO with a countrywide mandate.

SHU 2006

Milestone

Member schemes unite

Ten community CHF sub-schemes found MBUSO to strengthen member capacity and self-sustenance across Luwero, Nakaseke and Nakasongola.

SHU 2011

Milestone

Western Ankole network forms

SHU and ten community health insurance sub-schemes form WATSA to increase pooling, contract healthcare providers and advocate for quality services.

SHU 2022

Milestone

Eastern Uganda network grows

Eleven SHU-supported CHF sub-schemes establish BURATS in Iganga, Bugweri and Mayuge districts.

SHU 2023

Milestone

Community reach expands

By year-end, SHU support reaches 111 running CHF sub-schemes, 27,037 beneficiaries and a network of 36 healthcare providers.

National CHF conference convenes

SHU convenes the 8th National Community Health Financing Conference, bringing partners together around stronger community-led healthcare.
